Uses for ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin ear suspension is used to treat bilateral otitis media with effusion (a middle ear infection with thick or sticky fluid behind the eardrum) in children who are having tubes placed in their ears. Ciprofloxacin is part of a group of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or stopping them from growing.

This medicine should be given by or under the direct supervision of your doctor.

Precautions while using ciprofloxacin

Your doctor will monitor your child's progress closely while they are taking this medicine. This will help your doctor determine if the medicine is effective and if your child should keep taking it.

Call your child's doctor immediately if your child has fluid that keeps draining from the ear beyond the first few days after the ear tube surgery, or if the ear becomes painful.

Before using ciprofloxacin

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of using the drug must be weighed against the beneficial it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medication, the following should be considered:

Allergies

Inform your clinician if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this drug or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric

Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated pediatric-specific issues that would limit the usefulness of ciprofloxacin ear suspension in children. However, safety and efficacy have not been established in children younger than 6 months of age.

Geriatric

No guidance is available on the relationship of age to the effects of ciprofloxacin ear suspension in geriatric patients.

Breast Feeding

There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks prior to using this medication while breastfeeding.

Interactions with Medicines

Although certain medications should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your physician may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are receiving this medicine, it is especially important that your healthcare professional know if you are taking any of the drugs listed below. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
