Conivaptan (Intravenous)
Generic name: conivaptan
Brand names: Vaprisol
Uses for conivaptan
Conivaptan injection is used to treat euvolemic hyponatremia (a condition where there is not enough sodium in your blood but with a normal blood volume). Sodium is a chemical that the body needs to function properly. Even with a normal blood volume, a low sodium level can still be harmful to your health. Conivaptan helps to keep the right amount of sodium that the body needs.
This medicine should only be given by your doctor or under their supervision.

Precautions while using conivaptan
It is important for your doctor to check your progress during regular visits. This will help your doctor see if the medicine is working properly and decide if you should continue using it. Blood tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they get worse, check with your doctor.
You should not use clarithromycin (Biaxin®), indinavir (Crixivan®), itraconazole (Sporanox®), ketoconazole (Nizoral®), or ritonavir (Norvir®). Taking these medicines together may cause serious unwanted effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms after receiving this medicine: slurred speech, trouble speaking, trouble swallowing, seizures, or unusual drowsiness, dullness, tiredness, weakness, or feeling sluggish. These may be signs of a nerve problem called osmotic demyelination syndrome.
This medicine may make you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive or do anything that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.
Do not take other medicines unless your doctor has discussed them with you. This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.

Before using conivaptan
In deciding to use a medicine, the chances of using the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this drug, the following should be considered:
Allergies
Inform your physician if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other drugs. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatric
Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of conivaptan injection in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established.
Geriatric
Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific issues that would limit the usefulness of conivaptan injection in the elderly.
Breast Feeding
There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks prior to using this medicine while breastfeeding.
Interactions with Medications
Although certain drugs should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medications may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your clinician may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are receiving this drug, it is especially critical that your healthcare professional know if you are using any of the drugs listed below. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
