Hyskon (high molecular weight)
Generic name: dextran (high molecular weight)
Brand names: Hyskon, Dextran 70 6% in 5% Dextrose high molecular weight
What is high-molecular weight Hyskon?
High-molecular weight Hyskon is a plasma volume expander made from natural sources of sugar (glucose). It helps restore blood plasma that is lost due to severe bleeding. Severe blood loss can lower oxygen levels and can result in organ failure, brain damage, coma, and possibly death. Plasma is necessary to help red blood cells circulate and deliver oxygen throughout the body.
Hyskon is used to treat hypovolemia (decreased volume of circulating blood plasma), which can happen after surgery, trauma or injury, severe burns, or other causes of bleeding.
Hyskon may also be used for other reasons that are not listed in this medication guide.
