Nurtec ODT
Generic name: rimegepant
What is Nurtec?
Nurtec (rimegepant) is a prescription medicine used to treat acute migraine attacks (with or without aura) and to prevent episodic migraines in adults. It is an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) that dissolves on or under the tongue and is taken without water. Nurtec ODT is taken at the onset of a migraine to treat an acute migraine, or on an every-other-day schedule, to help prevent future migraines.
Nurtec belongs to a class of medications called CGRP inhibitors, also known as gepants.
The FDA first approved Nurtec in 2020. There is no generic version of Nurtec available.
What is Nurtec used for?
Nurtec is FDA-approved for use in adults for two purposes:
- the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura, meaning it is taken to relieve a migraine attack when it happens
- the preventive treatment of episodic migraine, meaning it is taken regularly to reduce how often attacks occur
Nurtec has not been established as safe or effective in children. It is not approved for chronic migraine or for other types of headache.
Nurtec ODT works by blocking calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptors. CGRP is a protein that is released during migraine attacks and is thought to play a role in migraine pain. When Nurtec blocks CGRP from acting at its receptor, it can help relieve an attack in progress and, taken every other day, help prevent attacks from starting. The exact way that the active ingredient rimegepant produces these effects is not fully understood.
Nurtec is a CGRP receptor antagonist.
How should I take Nurtec?
Take Nurtec exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Nurtec is an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) that dissolves on or under the tongue and is taken without water.
Nurtec is taken at the onset of a migraine to treat an acute migraine.
To prevent migraines, Nurtec is taken every-other-day.
Keep the tablet sealed in its blister pack until you are ready to take it, then:
- use dry hands to open the blister pack
- peel back the foil and gently remove the tablet, rather than pushing it through the foil
- place the tablet on or under your tongue right away
- let the tablet dissolve in saliva and swallow without water
Take the tablet immediately after opening the blister pack, and do not store it outside the packaging for later use. Nurtec can be taken with or without food.
